Celebrating Father’s Day
Today is Father’s Day. Let’s all take a moment to spread our love and appreciation for our fathers. And to all the fathers, thank you for being there for your kid(s) and family! Over a handful of new fathers have joined Stronger Faster in the past year; welcome to the club!
The Importance of Staying Active as You Age
It has been a rough couple of weeks in my family and one that I am sure will resonate with others or will at some point when they see a loved one in failing health. I want to share my dad’s story to underscore the importance of staying active and fit as we age.
My 75-year-old father experienced a series of falls, including one last week following the storm after Memorial Day that left Dallas without power. He was without power and unable to get up. He was found weak, malnourished, and dehydrated before being taken to the hospital after an unknown amount of time, hours, or maybe even days stuck on the ground without power. Thankfully, he did not break a hip, but his poor health, lack of physical strength, and resilience prevented him from being able to get back up.
The truth is, the fall only brought the issue to our attention—his condition is the result of a lifetime of inactivity and poor health choices catching up with him. It was shocking to see how frail he had become since he had stopped leaving the house. Despite relatively minor injuries, he is still in the hospital, undergoing physical rehabilitation to build enough strength to get out of bed. He likely won’t live independently again.
In contrast, one of our members’ fathers, who is just six months younger than mine, leads an active life. They recently completed the MS150 together and regularly enjoy 40-60-mile bike rides on Saturdays. He remains healthy and active and can enjoy life to the fullest, while my father struggles to get out of bed unassisted.
This stark difference highlights why everyone, young or old, should prioritize health and fitness and why we dedicate ourselves to helping others do the same through our gym. It’s never too late to turn your health around. Studies show we all lose muscle as we age unless we work to counteract that loss through strength training or physical activity. I hope my father will commit to making the changes necessary to regain his health and independence before it is too late.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, let it serve as a reminder to prioritize your and your family’s health. Whether you do it for yourself or as an example for your parents, children, or friends, it’s crucial to make fitness a consistent part of your life.
Lastly, please take a moment to hug your dad, mom, or kids today. Life is unpredictable, and those moments of connection are invaluable.
On a more inspirational note, this is my favorite Dad/Fitness/Aging clip and exemplifies our goals for all our members.
